In an era of digital perfection and algorithmic playlists, the promise of an authentic, analog soul experience can feel like a nostalgic fantasy. But on a crisp November night in Krakow, Cinnamon Gum - the meticulously crafted one-man vision of Maciej Milewski - did more than just promise, he delivered a full-sensory, time-traveling spectacle that was as genuine in its feeling as it was flawless in its execution.
A hush fell over Poczta Główna as the stage ignited in a soft, golden light, a portal to another time. A seven-piece band poised as if for a classic TV recording. And at the heart of it all was Maciej Milewski, the architect of this beautiful illusion, seamlessly transforming into ‘Cinnamon Guy’ - a soulful silhouette from a forgotten broadcast, now found and brought vividly to life.
From the first downbeat, it was clear this was no mere tribute act. This was a complete immersion. Backed by the sublime harmonies of Dorothy and Renee and the tight, groovy foundation of the ‘Cinnamon’ band - featuring standout work from Tommy Jr. on keys and Tony’s melodic basslines - Milewski led the audience on a journey through the golden age of soul and funk. The setlist, drawing heavily from the warm, rich sounds of the new album The Cinnamon Show, was a masterclass in mood. Tracks echoed the deep soul of Marvin Gaye and the smooth funk of Curtis Mayfield, but filtered through a distinctly personal and modern songwriting lens.
The magic of the evening lay in its beautiful contradiction: a one-man studio project exploded into a vibrant, communal live experience. While Milewski is the undeniable auteur - the writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist behind every note - on stage, he became the conductor of a soulful orchestra. The performance of “Get Back” from the debut EP Moon Water swelled with a new, infectious energy, while newer material felt like rediscovered classics, their lush arrangements and heartfelt lyrics on themes of love and hope filling the room with an almost tangible warmth.
The commitment to the analog aesthetic extended beyond the sound. The visual presentation, inspired by iconic shows like Soul Train, complete with stylish choreography and a palpable sense of joy, transformed the concert into a true show. It was a holistic performance where the sound, the sight, and the feeling were inextricably linked.
Cinnamon Gum stands as living proof that great musical eras don't fade away - they lie in wait, slumbering until a true devotee arrives to breathe new life into their timeless soul. For one night in Krakow, the past was not a memory, but a living, breathing, and irresistibly funky reality. Maciej Milewski hasn’t just created a project, he’s built a beautiful, soulful portal to another time, and everyone in the room was thrilled to take the trip.
