Joan release latest single, "body language"

By Abiageal Filon

On May 22, Little Rock-based duo joan released their latest single, “body language.” The single comes as their third this year as they continue to work on their upcoming album, “this won’t last forever.”

“body language” is a classic synth-pop joan track with a memorable bass line and rapid drums. Lead vocalist Alan Benjamin Thomas, with his ever-upbeat and soft voice, sings about having butterflies when being around that certain someone, and wanting to know them inside and out. Thomas and bandmate Steven Rutherford have a way with words, always finding new ways to beautifully compose tracks about yearning for and dreaming about someone.

“I got those first day flutters, don’t know why I’m feeling nervous

But if you want to teach me, I’ll take notes, I’ll be your student

Yeah, we can stay up all day, all night, until I am fluent

Can I read through your pages

Learn your body language”

This single is very reminiscent of their 2017 release, “Love Somebody Like You.” Thomas sings about only wanting that one person and not settling for anyone or anything else. He translates the pining feeling he experiences regarding this person into the catchy, fast-paced single we hear today, which has quickly entered my top favorite releases of the year. The bridge of the single is my favorite part, though.

“You’re the difference

New existence

You’re the moment

In time where my life begins”

Thomas tells us how he feels like his life didn’t start until he met this person, which in my opinion, is one of the most romantic things you could say about someone. “body language” is definitely a song you’d want played at your wedding while you hit the dance floor with your new spouse and your loved ones.

Joan is about to hit the road as support for Bloc Party, starting in Boston on May 30 and ending in Chicago on June 8. Tickets for said tour are available on their website, and the new single is available for on major streaming platforms like Apple Music and Spotify. While they work on their new album, make sure to keep streaming “body language!”
